Onion granules are "a secret to deliciousness"! In ancient times, they were widely used for both their flavor and medicinal properties. Today, while they may seem like a common cooking ingredient, many are unaware of their significant nutritional value.
Recent scientific studies indicate that consuming onions can benefit our health in various ways: they are low in calories and sodium and contain no cholesterol. They are rich in phytochemicals, such as disulfides and trisulfides, responsible for their characteristic aroma and their antimicrobial and anticancer properties. Onions also contain flavonoids, especially quercetin, which has strong antioxidant action, along with vitamins B6 and C, dietary fiber, potassium, calcium, manganese, chromium, and folic acid.
A Shield Against Cancer
Epidemiological studies suggest that flavonoids, particularly quercetin found in onions and other foods, inhibit the action and growth of cancer cells. A study from the Pharmacology Institute of Milan, published in 2006 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that those who regularly consume onions and garlic have a lower risk of developing cancer, with reductions in risk for oral and pharyngeal cancer at 84%, breast cancer at 25%, ovarian cancer at 73%, and prostate cancer at 71%.
Natural Regulator of Blood Sugar
Researchers believe that the allyl-propyl disulfides in onions are responsible for lowering blood sugar levels by increasing the amount of free available insulin in the bloodstream. A study published in 2003 in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition demonstrated the hypoglycemic and antioxidant effects of onions. They are also a good source of chromium, which clinical studies have shown to reduce fasting blood sugar levels, improve glucose tolerance, and lower total cholesterol and triglycerides, while increasing levels of good cholesterol.
Heart Health Friend
High cholesterol and blood pressure are risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Regular consumption of onions has been shown to reduce cholesterol levels and high blood pressure, acting preventively against coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, and heart attacks. This effect is primarily due to their sulfur compounds (flavonoids), which, together with chromium and vitamin B6 found in onions, lower homocysteine levels in the blood—a significant risk factor for heart attack.
Strong Anti-Inflammatory
Many components of onions help reduce symptoms associated with inflammatory conditions, whether due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or allergic asthma. The anti-inflammatory effects are mainly attributed to vitamin C and flavonoids, especially quercetin. A study published in 2006 in the Journal of Biological Regulators & Homeostatic Agents highlighted the medicinal effects of onions in inflammation.
For Strong Bones
Studies, primarily in animals, indicate that onion consumption helps prevent osteoporosis. A related study published in 2005 in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry supports that onion consumption helps maintain bone density, comparable to the pharmaceutical treatments given to osteoporosis patients.
Do Not Eat If...
If you have colitis (irritable bowel syndrome), avoid frequent consumption of onions, as it may worsen your condition. The same applies to breastfeeding mothers if their baby suffers from intestinal colic. Additionally, if you have irritable bowel syndrome, you should also avoid certain other hard vegetables, such as cabbage, cucumber, and cauliflower stems.
