Historical Information:
The name "thyme" derives from the Greek word “thymos” (spirit, mood). Originally, it meant “smoke,” likely referring to thyme’s strong scent. The ancient Egyptians are believed to have used it for embalming their dead. Its therapeutic effects on the lungs and bronchi became known in the Middle Ages. Abbess Hildegard von Bingen praised thyme for treating shortness of breath, asthma, and whooping cough. The extensive use of this aromatic herb in the kitchen is a good example of using natural ingredients to protect health. Thyme has antibacterial properties and, with its digestion-regulating qualities, makes many dishes, particularly meats and cold cuts, healthier.
Scientifically Proven Applications:
Both the Commission E and ESCOP support the use of thyme for respiratory tract inflammations, as well as bronchitis and whooping cough. ESCOP also supports its use for treating gastric mucosal inflammation and bad breath.
Thyme enhances expectoration in coughs (due to its terpenes) and soothes cough spasms (due to its flavonoids).
Thymol, present in the essential oil (up to 50%), also has strong antimicrobial action against various bacteria, viruses, and fungi and improves skin blood circulation.
Thyme extract also has strong antioxidant properties.
