Onion powder is a "secret for deliciousness"! In ancient times, it was widely used for both its flavor and medicinal properties. Today, it may be a common cooking ingredient, but many people are unaware of its significant nutritional value.

Recent scientific studies demonstrate that its consumption can benefit our health in many ways: it is low in calories and sodium, contains no cholesterol, and is rich in phytochemicals such as disulfides and trisulfides, which are responsible for its characteristic aroma and its antimicrobial and anticancer properties. It also contains flavonoids, particularly quercetin, which has strong antioxidant action, while also providing the body with vitamins B6 and C, dietary fiber, potassium, calcium, manganese, chromium, and folic acid. Therefore, read what research reveals about this humble but nutrient-rich bulb.

Shield Against Cancer:
Many epidemiological studies support that the flavonoids, particularly quercetin, contained in onions and other foods inhibit the action and growth of cancer cells. According to a study by the Institute of Pharmacology in Milan published in 2006 in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," those who consume onion and garlic regularly have lower chances of developing cancer. In fact, the risk reduction percentages for oral and pharyngeal cancer are 84%, for breast cancer 25%, for ovarian cancer 73%, and for prostate cancer 71%.

Natural Regulator of Blood Sugar:
Many researchers believe that the allyl-propyl-disulfides found in onions are responsible for lowering blood sugar levels, as they increase the amount of free available insulin in the blood. A study published in 2003 in the "International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition" demonstrated the hypoglycemic and antioxidant effects of onions. Onions are also a very good source of chromium. Clinical studies on diabetics published in reputable scientific journals like "Diabetes & Metabolism" found that chromium has the ability to reduce fasting blood sugar levels, improve glucose tolerance, lower total cholesterol and triglycerides, and increase levels of good cholesterol in the blood.

Your Heart's Friend:
High cholesterol and blood pressure levels are predisposing factors for cardiovascular diseases. Regular onion consumption has been shown to reduce cholesterol levels as well as high blood pressure. As a result, consuming onions acts preventively against coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, and heart attacks. This is mainly due to its sulfide components (flavonoids). These, in combination with chromium and vitamin B6 found in onions, lower homocysteine levels in the blood, which is another significant risk factor for cardiac arrest and heart attack. A meta-analysis of seven studies involving 100,000 people published in 2003 in the "European Journal of Clinical Nutrition" concluded that those who frequently consumed onions, tea, apples, and broccoli—rich sources of flavonoids (powerful antioxidants)—had a 20% lower chance of developing cardiovascular disease.

Powerful Anti-Inflammatory:
Many components of onions contribute to reducing the acidity of symptoms associated with inflammatory conditions, whether due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, allergic inflammatory asthma, or respiratory congestion from the common cold. The anti-inflammatory action of onions is mainly attributed to vitamin C and flavonoids, particularly quercetin. A study published in 2006 in the "Journal of Biological Regulators & Homeostatic Agents" by the Boston Medical School highlighted the significant pharmaceutical action of onions on inflammation.

For Strong Bones:
According to studies, primarily in animal models, onion consumption helps prevent osteoporosis. A relevant study in animal subjects published in 2005 in the "Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry," conducted at the University of Bern in Switzerland, supports that consuming onions helps maintain bone density, comparable to the pharmaceutical treatments given to osteoporosis patients.

Do Not Consume If:
You have colitis (irritable bowel syndrome); avoid frequent consumption of onion, as it will worsen your condition. The same applies to nursing mothers if their baby suffers from intestinal colic. If you have irritable bowel syndrome, you should also avoid consuming certain other hard vegetables, such as cabbage, cucumber, and cauliflower stalks.
