Sassafras is a relatively small deciduous tree native to Missouri but found throughout the eastern United States. The tree features characteristic greenish-yellow flowers that appear in April or May. However, it is the roots and the bark of the root (or the peeled root) that are used for medicinal purposes. The roots can be dried and used for tea, and they were previously used as a flavoring for root beer.
