Other Names: Botryoid Coriander, Cimicifuga, Cimicifuga racemosa, Black Cohosh
Cimicifuga (Cimicifuga racemosa), also known as Black Cohosh, is a well-known herb for addressing nerve and muscle pains, as well as arthritis. The useful part is the dried root.
The root of Cimicifuga contains resin (cimicifugin), bitter triterpenoid glycosides, ranunculin (which transforms into anemonin upon drying), salicylic acid, tannins, and estrogenic components. The herb acts as an emmenagogue, antispasmodic, calming agent (thanks to anemonin), and has a strong relaxing effect on the female reproductive system. It can be used with beneficial results in cases of painful or delayed menstruation, relieving cramps in the ovaries and uterus. It regulates normal hormonal activity and is also known for its use against headaches and tinnitus. Due to the salicylic acid it contains, it has anti-inflammatory action and is useful in cases of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and sciatica.
Ideal for Hot Flashes and Night Sweats
The specific function of this root is not yet fully understood by scientists, and a plausible theory suggests that it prompts the body to release more estrogen. Since one of the main issues during menopause is low estrogen levels, this explains the active effect of the root on hot flashes during this period. However, it is advisable to consult your doctor before taking the root, and it is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
