Washing soda, also known as soda ash or sodium carbonate, is widely used as a cleaning product and water softener.
Washing soda works by competing with magnesium and calcium ions in hard water, preventing them from binding with the detergent used (hence its function as a softener). It effectively removes stains, grease, and oils from clothes. Additionally, it is used as a descaler in coffee machines, kettles, etc.
Unlike most detergents, washing soda is non-toxic, making it less harmful to the environment.
Uses:
- As a laundry detergent booster and water softener (1 tablespoon alongside detergent).
- As a cleaner for tough surfaces (mixed into a paste with a little water).
- As a general cleaner (1 teaspoon in 2 cups of warm water, then transferred to a spray bottle).
- For cleaning soot (fireplace, oven, barbecue, etc.).
- As a pH regulator in pools, etc.
