Other Names: Goat Herb, Yin Yang Huo
Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium) is a leafy wild plant found in the highest altitude regions of the world, specifically in the mountains of central and southern China. Known in China as Yin Yang Huo, it has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years. It is said to have been discovered by a Chinese herder who noticed that his animals exhibited increased sexual activity after consuming this particular herb found on the mountain. After centuries of use, the aphrodisiac properties of the plant have been scientifically confirmed and its mechanism of action better understood.
Behind the peculiar name of this plant lies a time-tested aphrodisiac that improves erectile function in men, increases sexual desire in both men and women, relaxes the nervous system, and alleviates menstrual pain. The leaves of the plant contain polysaccharides, sterols, and a type of flavonoid called icariin. This compound is considered the main active ingredient in the plant's extracts. Studies have shown that icariin shares common mechanisms of action with medications used in Western medicine to treat erectile dysfunction and improve sexual function. Specifically, icariin inhibits the breakdown of phosphodiesterase (PDE5) in the smooth muscle cells lining the blood vessels that supply the penis, leading to relaxation of these smooth muscle tissues. This involuntary tension in the internal tissues eases as the nervous system shifts much of its function from sympathetic to parasympathetic. When this shift occurs, sexual function returns to normal levels as the body is no longer in a state of stress.
Horny Goat Weed also acts as an antioxidant, antidepressant, and stimulates bone stem cell activity, contributing to the treatment of osteoporosis.
While it thrives in China, it is also found in parts of Europe. In China, the plant, known for centuries as Yin Yang Huo (balancing Yin and Yang), is traditionally used to improve male sexual problems. Its English name clearly references its aphrodisiac action, as "Horny Goat Weed" translates directly to “herb of the randy goat.”
It also contains phytoestrogens, chemical compounds that act somewhat like the hormone estrogen, potentially reducing bone loss in postmenopausal women.
For enhancing libido and increasing sperm count, there is substantial evidence that Epimedium produces effects comparable to Viagra, without the unwanted side effects (such as hot flashes and headaches). In women, it has traditionally been used in China to combat fatigue and hypertension after menopause.
In both traditional Chinese medicine and by modern herbalists, Horny Goat Weed has been used for a range of conditions, including:
- Erectile dysfunction
- Low libido (sexual desire)
- Osteoarthritis
- Osteoporosis (bone thinning) or arthritis
- Joint pain
- Bronchitis
- Heart disease
- High blood pressure or cholesterol
- Fatigue or weakness
- Immune problems or inflammation
In Chinese herbal therapy, this herb has been used not only for treating impotence but also for asthma, bronchitis, heart failure, leukorrhea, leukopenia, menopause, and viral infections of the heart.
It improves erectile function in men, increases sexual desire in both men and women, relaxes the nervous system by reducing cortisol levels and alleviating stress, and provides relief from menstrual pain.
