Shea Butter is derived from the processing of the fruits of the Vitellaria Paradoxa tree, found in West and Central Africa. The tree begins to produce fruits, resembling large plums, when it reaches 10-15 years of age. Shea Butter has been known since ancient Egyptian times, as there are texts indicating its transport by caravans. The name comes from the Senegalese word ghariti, which describes the tree and was translated into French as "karité."
Shea Butter consists of five fatty acids, with stearic (Stearic Acid) and oleic (Oleic Acid) acids representing 85-90% of its composition. Its high content of plant fats gives Shea Butter remarkable moisturizing properties. Its use increases skin elasticity and helps maintain natural moisture. Shea Butter is particularly rich in phenolic compounds, which are known for their strong antioxidant properties. Of the ten phenolic compounds present in Shea Butter, seven are catechins, which are also found in green tea. Catechins are believed to enhance the skin's defense against external conditions like pollution and UV radiation while also acting as anti-aging agents by combating free radicals. Shea Butter contains vitamins E and A, which exhibit antimicrobial action and are valuable allies in addressing skin irritations, infections, and eczema.
Shea Butter is "solid" at room temperature. However, it "melts" immediately upon contact with the skin, providing deep and effective hydration right away. When used in soap making, Shea Butter is an excellent product that produces a rich, soft lather.
