The Elder tincture is made by soaking the flowers of the elderberry plant in an alcoholic solution (grappa) for a period of 4-6 weeks. During this time, the active ingredients of the flowers dissolve into the alcoholic solution, resulting in the tincture.
The Elder Tincture (Sambucus nigra) contains the same active ingredients as the dried elderberry herb. In modern herbal therapy, elderberry is primarily used to address influenza and its symptoms. Two independent clinical studies published in 2004 showed that elderberry consumption significantly reduces both the symptoms and recovery time from influenza (both type A and type B).
Elder contains the highest levels of potassium nitrate compared to any other herb and is rich in several vitamins (mainly A, B, and C). In the 17th century, it was a popular remedy for clearing phlegm, while in the 18th century in France, elderberry distillate was praised for its ability to lighten skin and reduce freckles. The leaves act as an external emollient and healing agent, an internal laxative, expectorant, diuretic, and diaphoretic. They are also used in a crushed form for bruises, sprains, wounds, and chilblains, typically in the form of a warm compress. For colds and fevers, elderberry is combined with peppermint or yarrow. For influenza, it is combined with agrimony.
Herbal tinctures retain all the active ingredients of the plant, are particularly easy to take, and are entirely natural. They undoubtedly surpass dietary supplements in pill form, as they contain no chemicals or preservatives and are absorbed much more effectively by the body.
Herbal tinctures are very potent and should be consumed according to the provided instructions. The usual dosage is 0.5-1ml (approximately 10-20 drops per day). It should not be consumed during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
