The Sage tincture is made from soaking the leaves and flowers of sage in an alcoholic solution (grappa) for a period of 4-6 weeks. During this time, the active ingredients dissolve into the alcoholic solution, resulting in the tincture.
Sage Tincture (Salvia triloba) contains the same active ingredients as dried sage herb. In modern herbal medicine, sage is used as a general tonic for the body as well as for various conditions. Herbalists believe sage acts as a "stimulant" mainly due to its essential oil content and as a "tonic" primarily because of its tannins. It is thought to help in cases of gastrointestinal atony (stimulating digestion). It may also be used to tone the nervous system and is believed to have a positive effect on nervous disorders, as well as melancholia or depression. Generally, sage is considered to "tonify" the entire organism.
Sage is particularly useful in managing excessive sweating, both night sweats and localized sweating in the hands and armpits. For this reason, it is considered beneficial for alleviating menopausal hot flashes. Many herbalists recommend sage for regulating menstruation, as it is thought to have estrogenic properties and a positive effect on amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea. As an infusion, it is highly effective for treating colds, as the phenolic acids it contains are considered antibacterial and thujone is a strong antiseptic.
Sage can also be used as a mouthwash for gingivitis and as a gargle for sore throats, laryngitis, pharyngitis, and tonsillitis.
Tinctures retain all the active ingredients of the herb, are particularly easy to take, and are completely natural. They undoubtedly have advantages over dietary supplements in pill form, as they do not contain chemicals or preservatives and are absorbed much more effectively by the body.
Herbal tinctures are very potent, and for this reason, they should be consumed according to the provided instructions. The usual dosage is 0.5-1ml (approximately 10-20 drops per day). They should not be consumed during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
