Passionflower Oil (Passionflower Seed Oil) is derived from the processing of the seeds of the plant Passiflora Incarnata, which is one of the 500 species in the wider family of Passifloraceae. Passiflora Incarnata is the state flower of Tennessee in the U.S. and is particularly widespread in the Southern United States. Historically, the herb was used by the Cherokee Indians, who referred to the passionflower as ocoee.
Passionflower Oil is particularly rich in omega fatty acids. Its average composition is 74% omega-6, 5.4% omega-3, and 19.0% omega-9. Recent studies have shown that Passionflower Oil possesses antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. For this reason, it is recommended in cases where the skin is very dry (on the body or scalp) and often suffers from itchiness. Since Passionflower Oil is generally considered soothing for the skin, it is often used in premium massage oils as it contributes to an overall sense of relaxation.
Not only does Passionflower Oil function as a skin "soother," but it is also an important source of nourishment for the skin. It is rich in trace elements such as magnesium, sodium, calcium, and potassium. It contains vitamins A, B, C, and 17 plant-based amino acids.
Passionflower Oil is an excellent choice for those with very dry skin and who frequently experience itching issues. It is ideal as an ingredient in hair care products.
Passionflower Oil can be used alone or in combination with other carrier oils for even better results. Finally, it’s important to note that carrier oils are essential in aromatherapy as they serve as the "vehicle" for adding essential oils.
