Horse Chestnut Oil, like all our carrier oils, is made with extra virgin olive oil processed with our fresh herbs. Research has shown that when carrier oils are made with fresh herbs (like ours), they deliver 100% of their potential properties, unlike commercial oils made with dried herbs that yield only about 50%!
The horse chestnut tree, or Aesculus hippocastanum, is a deciduous tree that grows to a height of about 22 to 23 meters. Until the 19th century, Europeans believed it was native to the mountains north of India. It was eventually discovered that it grows wild very close to them, in the mountains of Northern Greece and other Balkan countries. It was introduced to Central Europe in 1576 with seeds from Constantinople.
Horse chestnut is an important source of bioflavonoids and proanthocyanidins, compounds known for their antioxidant properties. Its fruit is rich in tannins, flavonoids, starch, oil, and the glycosides aescin and fraxin, which are highly astringent and tonifying for the circulatory system.
Horse Chestnut Oil, extracted from the seeds of the fruit, is a traditional remedy for vein health. It provides relief for the blood vessels in the circulatory system, protecting and toning the capillaries, enhancing blood flow and fluid exchange between cell membranes. This helps alleviate symptoms such as tingling, pain, itching, fatigue, and a feeling of heaviness or coldness associated with poor circulation in the legs. It is also beneficial in combating rheumatism, varicose veins, phlebitis, arteriosclerosis, and hemorrhoids. It helps reduce swelling (fluid retention) after injury, especially in sports injuries or after surgery. In recent years, its beneficial use for skin issues has also become evident, as it helps combat cellulite and skin aging.
Caution! The oil should not be used on broken skin, as the saponins it contains may cause irritation.
Horse Chestnut Oil can be used alone or in combination with other carrier oils for even better results. It’s also important to note that carrier oils are essential in aromatherapy as they serve as the "carrier" for essential oils.
