Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is a well-known plant (large shrub or less commonly a tree) believed to originate from North America. It is now widely cultivated as an ornamental plant and can be found in gardens all over the world.

Historically, Witch Hazel was initially used as a medicinal herb by Native American tribes in North America. Its uses primarily included treating eye infections, insect bites, hemorrhoids, dysentery, and skin conditions. Witch Hazel began gaining recognition for its properties from 1848 onwards when American Theron T. Pond "commercialized" its extract based on knowledge acquired from the Oneida tribe.

In modern herbal medicine, Witch Hazel is mainly used externally in the form of compresses. It is particularly effective in treating hemorrhoids and phlebitis, and as an eyewash, it is considered effective for treating eye infections and conjunctivitis. Generally, Witch Hazel is regarded as excellent for managing bleeding. Its action is thought to stem from its ability to shrink blood vessels and restore them to their normal size.

Traditionally, it is also used for diarrhea, colitis, blood in the cough, tuberculosis, colds, fevers, tumors, and cancer.

According to herbalists, preparing a compress is quite simple. Place a quantity of the herb into a pot, cover with water, and simmer for 10-15 minutes. Strain the herb and soak a clean cloth (towel, gauze, etc.) in the infusion. Apply the cloth to the skin while warm. Alternatively, you can make a poultice by wrapping the boiled herb in gauze and securing it on the body.

It has antiseptic and mild anti-inflammatory properties. It is used to combat acne and to moisturize the skin.

Properties:

  • Acts as a good tonic for the digestive system and is administered for stomach ulcers, colic, mucous or bloody stools, and irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Reduces inflammation and acts as an astringent, hence it is used to soothe sore throats, colds, and fever, as well as tuberculosis.
  • Externally, it is effective in relieving varicose veins, hemorrhoids, insect bites, acne, psoriasis, and eczema.
  • Improves skin texture and combats aging and the appearance of wrinkles.
  • Used for eye washes in infections, it reduces dark circles under the eyes.
  • Acts as an astringent, causing tissues to contract to shrink pores while soothing the skin from inflammation, thus preventing bacteria from affecting the skin.
  • Relieves sensitivity in the scalp and helps with cases of subcutaneous dermatitis, dryness, and dandruff.

Placing fresh leaves of the plant on varicose veins relieves the legs. The diluted cold infusion of the bark is used for eye washes in cases of conjunctivitis. Lastly, it controls diarrhea and assists with dysentery.
