Catnip essential oil is obtained from the herb (Nepeta cataria) through steam distillation. The yield of essential oil from the plant material ranges between 0.2% and 0.7%. Catnip essential oil is typically a colorless to yellow liquid with a fresh, strong, and spicy aroma. The oil easily dissolves in alcohol (1:1 ethanol), vegetable oils, and other essential oils but is almost insoluble in water.
Key components include: citronellol, geraniol, citral, β-caryophyllene, limonene, and lactone derivatives such as nepetalactone.
The constituents of catnip essential oil have medicinal characteristics. As early as the Middle Ages, catnip essential oil was used for digestive disorders via infusion. Recent studies suggest that catnip essential oil may also be useful for viral infections such as herpes. Additionally, it is said to have antibacterial properties and can be used for urinary tract infections. Furthermore, catnip essential oil is believed to possess litholytic properties.
In aromatherapy, catnip essential oil is known as a calming oil. It can be used in aromatic candles to combat anxiety and nervous depression.
Catnip essential oil combines well with: Eucalyptus, Fennel, Oregano, Rosemary, Thyme, Ylang-Ylang, Orange, Lemon, Clove, Sage, Lemon Balm, St. John’s Wort, Citronella, and Basil.
