Myrtle (Myrtus communis) is an evergreen shrub with aromatic white or pink flowers, primarily found in Mediterranean regions. Its essential oil is extracted from the leaves, branches, and flowers of the plant. It contains key compounds such as cineole, myrtenol, pinene, geraniol, limonene, coumarin, and other active ingredients known for their therapeutic effects.
Historically, myrtle has been recognized for its beneficial properties, revered in ancient Greece as the sacred plant of Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty and love. Ancient Greek physician Dioscorides mentioned it as a remedy for respiratory infections and bladder issues.
In modern aromatherapy, myrtle essential oil is primarily used for respiratory ailments and skincare. It is a non-toxic, gentle oil, making it suitable for children and the elderly. It is particularly effective for respiratory issues like asthma, bronchitis, nasal congestion, and cough, and can be placed in a child's room to alleviate nighttime cough. Additionally, it may help treat urinary tract infections. With its astringent properties, myrtle is useful for oily and mature skin, as well as skin prone to open pores and acne.
The organic essential oil of myrtle is a greenish-yellow liquid with a characteristic spicy and terpene aroma, accompanied by camphor and eucalyptus notes. It easily dissolves in alcohol (ethanol), vegetable oils, and other essential oils, but not in water. Its primary components include isomeric pinene, terpineol, and limonene.
Recent studies indicate that organic myrtle essential oil has strong mucolytic action, making it effective against bronchitis, sinusitis, and cystic fibrosis through inhalation and rubbing. In cases of acute prostate inflammation (prostatitis), it acts as a decongestant when applied via compresses, rubs, or bath oils. For tonsillitis caused by staphylococci or Candida, it exhibits antimicrobial properties and can be used as an ointment, bath oil, or through inhalation. Additionally, it stimulates the liver in cases of liver insufficiency via compresses and plasters. When incorporated into cosmetic products, it has a toning effect on the skin, aiding in the treatment of wrinkled skin and acne.
In aromatherapy, organic myrtle essential oil is used for sleep disturbances due to its calming effects. It also serves as an anxiolytic, beneficial for general anxiety and mild depression.
