Sage (Salvia Officinalis) is a perennial, shrubby plant with numerous branches and thick, elongated, fuzzy greenish-white leaves. It is primarily found in dry, rocky areas of the Greek countryside. The essential oil of Sage is derived from the distillation of its herb and flowers, possessing a sweet, herbaceous aroma, and exhibits bactericidal, fungistatic, and virucidal properties.
Sage essential oil calms the nervous system and is recommended by aromatherapists for cases of depression, anxiety, insomnia, and painful periods. It helps reduce hot flashes, night sweats, irritability, headaches, and dizziness. Inhaling its aroma has mucolytic and decongestant effects, making it advisable for cases of influenza, colds, and more. Research by British scientists from Newcastle and Northumbria universities has shown that it enhances memory function and concentration.
Additionally, the aroma is believed to stimulate sexual desire.
Beyond burning, Sage essential oil can relieve muscle pain, lower back pain, neck stiffness, cramps, and dysmenorrhea by adding 2-3 drops to a massage oil or body lotion. It is also used in facial creams, particularly for oily skin, to balance sebum production and act astringently. It can be added to shampoos to enhance the natural color of hair without damaging it or burdening the skin with harmful chemicals. Sage essential oil is very potent, and in large quantities, it can cause toxicity. Just 2 drops in 100ml of water can be used for gargles and rinses to address toothaches and mouth sores. Ingestion is not allowed.
Sage essential oil combines very well with: Rosemary, Oregano, Bay, Lavender, Pine, Jasmine, and Lemon.
