The Helichrysum essential oil is derived from the flowers of plants in the genus Helichrysum, which includes over 500 species. The name originates from the Greek words for "sun" and "gold," referencing the impressive color and shape of the flowers that resemble large, golden daisies. This plant is native to South Africa, Australia, and Eurasia. The essential oil has a rich, sweet aroma, and production occurs within 24 hours of harvesting the plant using steam distillation.
Historically, the essential oil of Helichrysum flowers has been known since ancient Greek times for its strong wound-healing properties. Warriors often used it after battles to heal their wounds more quickly and avoid skin infections.
According to modern university research, it is the only essential oil found to contain diketones, substances that actively assist in wound healing and skin regeneration in the affected area. It is suitable for treating wounds resulting from accidents or surgical procedures. This essential oil can also aid in the healing of burns, bruises, acne, and dermatitis. Another key component is the acetate of nerol, a substance with relaxing effects that can reduce tissue tension in the injury area. Due to this property, it is often used by athletes for internal injuries, muscle pain, and joint stiffness. Helichrysum essential oil also has beneficial effects on respiratory diseases such as colds, flu, bronchitis, cough, and asthma when inhaled.
On a psychological level, it can also have healing effects, closing emotional wounds from the past and releasing trapped mental energy. The aroma of the oil soothes anger and helps individuals who are emotionally blocked restore their mental balance.
Helichrysum essential oil blends well with Chamomile, Lavender, Sage, Bergamot, and any citrus family oil.
