Spearmint is the common name for the plant Mentha spicata. The essential oil of spearmint is obtained through steam distillation of its leaves and has a slightly sweeter aroma than peppermint.
The essential oil of spearmint is used in aromatherapy for regulating breathing, enhancing mental clarity, and improving memory. It also has beneficial effects for conditions such as fatigue, lethargy, nausea, fever, and headaches.
Spearmint essential oil is a colorless to pale yellow liquid. It has a fresh, cool scent, accompanied by hints of cumin. The essential oil of spearmint easily dissolves in alcohol (1:1.5, ethanol 80%), vegetable oils, and other essential oils. It is almost insoluble in water. The main component is (-)-carvone, with smaller amounts of limonene and linalool.
The constituents of spearmint essential oil also have medicinal properties. As a non-cooling essential oil, spearmint is suitable for treating colds. It acts against acute and chronic bronchitis and nasal congestion as an expectorant when used in inhalation, as a compress, or in bath oil. Additionally, spearmint essential oil aids digestion and bile flow, making it useful for gastritis, nausea, and abdominal massage in the bladder area, as well as for circulation and for wrapping a specific area or using as bath oil. For scars and wounds, spearmint essential oil can promote healing through its epithelial properties when used as a dressing, massage oil, or bath oil. If itching occurs, spearmint essential oil can be used as an ointment or oil and helps prevent inflammation in affected areas.
In aromatherapy, spearmint essential oil is valued for its balancing, soothing, and exfoliating properties. For mental and physical exhaustion, symptoms associated with anxiety and general tension, spearmint essential oil can be used as an aromatic space oil, massage oil, bath oil, or inhalation bottle. It can also be used for memory difficulties and lack of concentration.
Usage percentage up to 2%. In skin care products up to 0.5%. Not to be applied directly to the skin.
Spearmint essential oil combines well with grapefruit, lavender, rosemary, lemon, and basil.
