Basil, scientifically known as Ocimum basilicum, is an annual ornamental herb from the Lamiaceae family, reaching heights of over 70 cm. It is a plant known since antiquity, with references to its use by Chinese healers and in Ayurvedic medicine in India, as well as by the Greek physician Dioscorides.
The essential oil of basil is derived from steam distillation of its leaves. It has a pale yellow color and a fresh, sweet, slightly spicy aroma. The most significant aromatic compounds include estragole, linalool, camphor, and tannins, with a high percentage of methyl chavicol (about 80%), which imparts the virtues attributed to the essential oil.
Scientific studies have demonstrated that basil essential oil possesses strong antioxidant, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties. It is ideal for treating colds, flu symptoms, and coughs, and is the first choice for alleviating mental fatigue, lethargy, stress, and depression. Furthermore, it is considered an excellent antispasmodic and is thus used in massage oils for muscle pain, cramps, and menstrual pain. Finally, it is one of the best essential oils for diffusers, effectively refreshing the atmosphere, repelling insects, and is believed to attract good fortune.
Basil essential oil is utilized in various fields of alternative medicine. It is commonly used for digestive issues and bloating. Additionally, it is used against nausea and vomiting as a tea extract. Its application as an inhalant for blocked nasal passages has proven beneficial.
Basil essential oil (type Linalool) is used in aromatherapy for depression and as an anxiolytic. It has a revitalizing effect on the nervous system and improves concentration.
Basil essential oil (type Linalool) is used in cosmetics as an ingredient in men’s fragrances for the production of aldehydes, opopanax, cypress, and green notes. It is also included in eau-de-cologne.
Generally, basil essential oil (type Linalool) is not used in cooking, although basil as an herb is a traditional and highly valued spice in Mediterranean cuisine.
