Sandalwood, scientifically known as Santalum album, is a small, evergreen tree—reaching heights of up to 9 meters—from the Santalaceae family, featuring hard leaves and small red flowers. Sandalwood or Heartwood is the complete wood where the tree deposits secondary metabolic products—in this case, its fragrant yellow viscous oil. The best wood comes from trees aged over 60 years. Sandalwood has been a source of valuable wood and aromatic oil since the fifth century BC.
The essential oil of the plant is obtained through steam distillation of Sandalwood and has the aroma of aged wood. The main molecules in its chemical composition are sesquiterpenols (70%): cadinol, balsamol, and caryophyllene, substances with exceptional therapeutic properties.
Sandalwood essential oil has significant relaxing and soothing properties. It is said to calm both body and mind, while also contributing to the relief of anxiety, stress, and depression. Additionally, it is considered ideal for addressing infections of the upper respiratory system, such as bronchitis and laryngitis, and is often used for skin regeneration and rejuvenation. Recent studies have also shown that it significantly aids in the healing of wounds and injuries. Adding a few drops of sandalwood to your aftershave cream can relieve redness, inflammation, and skin irritation. Finally, in synergy with patchouli and ylang-ylang essential oils, it is recommended as a powerful aphrodisiac, suitable for creating a warm, romantic atmosphere, and is ideal for enhancing spirituality and meditation.
It has antiseptic, soothing, and rejuvenating properties for the skin and is suitable for skin ulcers, wrinkles, acne, eczema, irritations, telangiectasia, and cellulite.
Sandalwood essential oil combines well with: Ylang-ylang, Lavender, Citronella, Cedar.
Caution! Not recommended during the first three months of pregnancy, and it should be noted that it is quite viscous!
