Lion's Mane is an edible mushroom with medicinal values, also known as “Lion’s Mane” or “Hedgehog Mushroom.” This mushroom belongs to the Agaricomycetes class under the Basidiomycetes subphylum. In Chinese and Japanese, it is known as “hóu tóu gū” and “yamabushitake.”

This mushroom is primarily found in East Asian countries and has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine. Numerous studies have reported its potential beneficial properties or health-promoting activities, such as anti-cancer, antihypertensive, lipid-lowering, and neuroprotective effects.

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. It is renowned for its appearance, resembling a lion's mane, from which it derives its name. This mushroom is particularly popular due to its numerous beneficial properties.

The compounds Hericenones and Erinacines found in it stimulate the synthesis of the nerve growth factor (NGF), a key factor in the growth of nerve cells. This has drawn researchers' attention due to its significant neuroregenerative properties.

In Japan, scientists discovered that these compounds prolong the regeneration and survival of brain neurons and nervous tissue, improving memory.

Properties - Indications

  • May protect against dementia. Studies have shown that Lion's Mane mushrooms contain two special compounds that can stimulate the growth of brain cells: hericenones and erinacines.
  • Helps relieve mild symptoms of depression and anxiety.
  • May accelerate recovery from nervous system injuries.
  • Protects against ulcers in the digestive system. Lion's Mane may protect against the development of stomach ulcers by inhibiting the growth of H. pylori and protecting the stomach from damage.
  • Reduces the risk of heart disease.
  • Aids in managing diabetes symptoms.
  • May help combat cancer. Some studies suggest that Lion's Mane mushroom has cancer-fighting abilities due to its unique compounds.
  • Reduces inflammation and oxidative stress.
  • Boosts the immune system by increasing the activity of the intestinal immune system, which protects the body from pathogens entering through the mouth or nose.

Additionally, these compounds act soothingly on the stomach lining, aiding in conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux, gastritis, hyperacidity, and heartburn.

It also restores disturbances in gut flora, especially after antibiotic use.

Recent studies on Lion's Mane usage have shown that:

  • It helps address gastrointestinal issues.
  • It helps increase physical strength.
  • It aids in boosting the immune system.
  • It helps lower glucose levels.
  • It contributes to addressing dementia & Alzheimer's symptoms.
  • It protects liver health.
  • It protects kidney health.
  • It slows biological aging.
  • It helps prevent excessive lipid accumulation in the blood.
  • It lowers high blood pressure.
  • It improves sleep quality and REM sleep.

Lion's Mane is rich in vitamins, minerals, and trace elements necessary for well-being and overall proper functioning of our body. It is high in powerful antioxidants (phenols) and sterols (such as ergosterol), a substance that combats many types of abnormal cells while also exhibiting anti-aging effects.

Lion's Mane also contains a wide range of amino acids, proteins, beta-glucans, and active polysaccharides. Apart from polysaccharides, other significant compounds include triterpenes, erinacine, and hericenone, which enhance nerve growth factor production (NGF) and are beneficial in cases of neurodegenerative disorders.

Lion's Mane has been used to support healthy brain function, healing and regeneration of nerve tissue, improving cognitive function and muscle coordination, supporting the digestive system (ulcers), combating anxiety and depression, and boosting the immune system, while also showing action against the formation of abnormal cells, improving menopause symptoms, and more. In traditional Chinese medicine, it has been used to treat digestive, gastrointestinal, and immune system disorders.

Research also suggests that Lion's Mane may protect nerves from disease or decay, according to a 2015 study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. The same study concludes that the mushroom shows additional health-promoting benefits.
