The Inula tincture, also known as Konyza, Akoniza, Psilochorto, Psilistra, or Ommono, is made by soaking the roots of the Inula plant in an alcoholic solution (grappa) for a period of 4-6 weeks. During this time, the active ingredients of the herb dissolve into the alcoholic solution, resulting in the tincture.
In modern herbal medicine, Inula is primarily used to address respiratory disorders and as a digestive tonic. In the first case, herbalists use Inula for chronic bronchitis, asthma, persistent cough, and generally all respiratory infections. The active compounds, eleenin and alantolactone, are strong antiseptics and bactericides. Inula's action in the lungs is warming and expectorant, and the volatile oils (approximately 4%) it contains help expel concentrated phlegm from the respiratory system.
In the second case, Inula is used by herbalists to improve digestion. The active ingredient inulin (up to 44%) enhances the absorption of calcium and magnesium while promoting the growth of essential gut bacteria. Inulin is a dietary fiber and is classified by many experts as a prebiotic. Additionally, Inula contains isoalantolactone, azulene, sterols, resin, and pectin.
It has antiseptic action in the upper respiratory tract, soothes spasmodic cough, has expectorant properties, and is traditionally used for smoker's cough.
