Devil's Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) is a herb that thrives in dry conditions and is found in South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana. It was introduced to Europe by colonists in the 20th century, but efforts to cultivate it on the continent have been largely unsuccessful.

Known as "Devil's Claw," this creeping, perennial herb has particularly resilient roots and is one of the most valuable medicinal herbs provided by the African continent. The San people of the Kalahari Desert, which spans Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa, were among the first to use Devil's Claw as an analgesic, for digestive issues, and to relieve various allergies. In Europe, the plant gained popularity in the 20th century for other medicinal purposes, primarily as a diuretic, a sedative, and most notably for degenerative diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

The main active ingredients in the plant are the glycosides harpagoside, harpagide, and procumbide, which are found in its tubers.

Devil's Claw is primarily used for treating arthritis, rheumatism, myalgia, sciatica, low back pain, and tendonitis. It possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties, comparable to those of cortisone, and is recommended as an analgesic for muscle pain. It improves appetite and aids in stomach disorders. Additionally, it is beneficial for the skin, relieves dyspepsia, and is effective against headaches and migraines.

Due to its analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, Devil's Claw can be used in autoimmune conditions (such as psoriasis, scleroderma, and lupus), as well as in various inflammatory conditions (inflammation of the liver, kidneys, tendons, and ligaments).

In a study involving individuals with osteoarthritis over four months, those taking Devil's Claw supplements experienced similar positive results as those on conventional medication, but with fewer side effects. There is also significant evidence that Devil's Claw reduces inflammation, such as that caused by tendonitis and epicondylitis, as well as elevated uric acid levels. Furthermore, it improves appetite and alleviates mild stomach disorders.

Side Effects & Contraindications: Devil's Claw is non-toxic, but internal use may cause excessive secretion of stomach acids, thus it is contraindicated for individuals with peptic ulcers, gastritis, or gallstones. Those with diabetes should use it under medical supervision due to its hypoglycemic properties. Its consumption is contraindicated for individuals taking medications for blood pressure regulation. Finally, the herb is not recommended during pregnancy or lactation, nor for children, as there is insufficient data regarding its safety in these cases.

Preparation:
1 teaspoon of powdered Devil's Claw (or a small pinch of uncrushed) is added to a container with 1 cup of water, boiled for 5-10 minutes, then strained before use.
