Petitgrain essential oil is derived from the plant scientifically known as Citrus Aurantium Amara, commonly known as the Bitter Orange tree, an evergreen tree from the Rutaceae family, originally from China, widely distributed in countries with temperate, Mediterranean climates. It is produced through steam distillation of the plant's leaves, while historically it was extracted from the green, unripe fruits of the tree when they were cherry-sized, which is where its name comes from, meaning "little grain."
The essential oil of Petitgrain has a pale yellow to amber color and a sweet, floral, slightly herbal aroma. The main molecules in its chemical composition are esters: linalyl acetate, nerol acetate, terpenyl acetate, and alcohols: linalool, nerol, α-terpineol—substances with significant therapeutic value.
According to recent research, Petitgrain essential oil possesses important antimicrobial, antibacterial, antiseptic, antispasmodic, deodorizing, and soothing properties. It cleanses and tones the skin, aiding in the treatment of acne and balancing oily or combination skin. It is also suitable for treating hysteria, panic attacks, and depression, as well as for addressing tachycardia, anxiety, and insomnia issues. Additionally, it is used to relieve respiratory infections and combat inflammation and pain. Finally, it is particularly useful as a massage oil for addressing muscle spasms of nervous origin, as well as arthritis, tendinitis, and rheumatism.
Petitgrain essential oil combines excellently with: Bergamot, Clary Sage, Clove, Geranium, Grapefruit, Jasmine, Lavender, Lemon, Lime, Mandarin, Neroli, Orange, Palmarosa, and Rosemary.
